The Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities offers specialised training to carers, families, support staff, home managers and care professionals across North Somerset.

Autism: Supporting Communication - (Also suitable for Shared Lives Carers)

Description: This course has been designed for care providers, key workers, support staff and family carers who support people with autistic spectrum disorders. The course is also suitable for qualified health professionals who would benefit from an introduction to communicating with people with autism. The learning outcomes of this course are:

  • Enable carers and professionals to identify how autism impacts on communication.
  • Increase knowledge about the different ways people with autism comprehend information.
  • Identify optimum communication strategies that can be used to support communication.
  • How to make positive changes to an individual’s communicative environment.

Communicating with People with a Learning Disability - (Also suitable for Shared Lives Carers)

Description:  This course has been designed for care providers, key workers, support staff and family carers who support people with learning Disability and communication difficulty. The course is also suitable for qualified health professionals who would benefit from an introduction to communicating with people with a learning disability.

  • Sleep Workshops
  • Transition (Financial, Wills and Trusts, Future Planning and Mental Capacity)
  • Transition (SEND Education and Mental Capacity)
  • Puberty and Relationships (which also incorporates Sexual Mental Capacity)
  • SEND – Education and Health Care Plans, Person Centred Planning, Children and Families Act

We can also attend coffee mornings /drop ins/ SENCO Conferences /Health Visitors CPD days etc to work around disability awareness and the above subjects

Creating Effective Communication Environments

Description: This course has been designed for care providers, key workers, support staff and family carers who support people with learning disability and communication difficulty. The course is also suitable for qualified health professionals who would benefit from an introduction to communicating with people with a learning disability. The learning outcomes of this course are:

  • Increase knowledge about barriers impacting on our ability to communicate effectively with service users with a learning disability.
  • Increase knowledge about the variety of communication strategies recommended by Speech & Language Therapy to help overcome communication barriers.
  • Ensure awareness of the role and responsibility of a communicative partner in facilitating good communication and supporting communication approaches.

Epilepsy Awareness - (Also suitable for Shared Lives Carers)

Description: Identify ‘what is epilepsy’, Have an understanding of the causes of epilepsy, Awareness of the diagnostic process, Awareness of epilepsy treatment, Recognise different types of seizures, Support an individual whilst having a seizure, Balance the potential risks with a person’s lifestyle choices, Know the importance of effective monitoring and recording, Have an understanding of epilepsy management plans, Safely administer Buccal Midazolam

  • Administration of Buccal Midazolam

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Description:  The aim and main focus of the course will be the health and wellbeing of adults with learning disabilities and how you can support them to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support

Description:   For carers, families, support staff, home managers and professionals.

  • To support participants to gain an understanding of behaviours that challenge services.
  • To provide insight into the PBS model
  • To enable participants to have an insight into the functional analysis of behaviours
  • To develop insight into proactive behavioural support
  • To develop participants risk management skills

Money Matters

Description: Any Parent/Carer of any child/young person with additional needs.   Suitable for parents of children who would like to know more about benefits and entitlements for both carers and their disabled child.

North Somerset Council Adult Care Training

All North Somerset Council Adult Care Training courses can be booked via CPD online.

Full details of all courses are available online – please check that the course is suitable for your role and that your manager agrees before booking.

A 2 week closing date operates for most courses on CPD online – if you try to book your place at the last minute the course may have closed. Contact the Training Co-ordinators if you need a last minute booking, as places may still be available.

Full Day courses are £30 per person (per day) and Half Day courses are £15 per person (per half day).

A number of courses in this bulletin can also be delivered in-house for more information or to book an in-house session please contact the Training Coordinators.

In House training courses are charged at £150 for half a day for a maximum of 12 people and £240 for a maximum of 20 people. Discounts are available for block bookings and the cancellation policy below still applies.

Cancellations within 14 days of the date of the course, including non-attendance on the day, will be charged £25 per person.

Positive Behaviour Approach_2 Day Workshop - (Also suitable for Shared Lives Carers)

Description: For carers, families, support staff, home managers and professionals. To support participants to gain an understanding of behaviours that challenge services

  • To provide insight into the PBS model
  • To enable participants to do basic functional analysis of behaviours
  • To be able to create evidence based PBS plan
  • To develop participants risk management skills
  • To enable participants to accurately review and update their plans

Supporting Swallowing Difficulties - (Also suitable for Shared Lives Carers)

Description: This course has been designed for care providers, key workers, support staff and family carers who support people with a learning disability with difficulty eating, drinking and/or swallowing. The course is also suitable for qualified health professionals who would benefit from an introduction to swallowing difficulty.

The course will enable carers and professionals to identify eating, drinking and swallowing difficulty and provide/review optimum conditions to support service users, in line with their eating and drinking instructions.
